Adding Quartz Countertops To Your Home

Quartz is not only beautiful, but it is also very common. Quartz is second only to water as the most common mineral based resource on our planet. This stone is very hard and ranks a 7 on the Moh’s scale, which makes it very scratch resistant. The only stones that are harder than quartz are diamonds, topaz, and sapphire.

Quartz countertops are very hard and scratch resistant. They are manufactured with nearly one hundred percent quartz. In contrast, granite countertops may only have fifty percent quartz. Throughout the industry, quartz countertops are made of ninety three percent quartz, with the other seven percent made up of pigments and resins. The result of this is that quartz countertops are non porous, very durable, and over twice as strong as granite.

In the manufacturing process, the raw quartz crystals that are used range in size from coarse grains to the size of rock salt. Once these are ground, the crystals are combined with bonding agents and color, and then the mixture is heated and compacted in order to form a hard surface. The resulting slab will be a quartz matrix that will not develop cracks. Because there are no pores, the material is impenetrable to water, moisture, or bacteria. Because they add pigments to the raw quartz, it is possible to get any color so that you can better match the décor of the kitchen. Polishing wheels are then used in order to give the surface a shiny finish.

One thing to keep in mind when planning for these countertops is that due to their density, these countertops will weigh a lot more than granite. Also, because of their special manufacturing techniques, it is best to hire a professional to install these countertops for you. When you are putting out the money for the high quality of quartz, this is not the time to skimp and try to save a few pennies on installation.
