Curb Appeal – The WOW Factor

Whether you are looking to sell your home, or just want to spruce it up to make it more appealing to your family and friends, there are relatively inexpensive changes that you can make to give your home a fresh look. You never get a second chance to make a first impression, if I may use an overused phrase. When you sell your home, people will often make the decision as to whether or not they want to look at the inside based on how your home looks from the street. Sometimes it helps to get a second opinion for ideas because after living in a home for many years, we can become comfy with its appearances and overlook our home’s “warts.”

First, take a look at the exterior of your home. How long has it been since it was painted last? A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for the look of your home. Also consider the color. Does everyone on your street have a white house? Maybe it’s time to try a fresh new color to set your home apart from the crowd. What kind of siding do you have? Is it brick, stucco, or siding? Nothing says the 1960s like multicolored bricks. It might be a great time to get an estimate on new siding to refresh and modernize your home’s looks. If you have large windows with nothing around them, the house will look flat. Adding shutters in a darker contrasting color can make your home jump out and demand your attention. If you already have shutters, giving them a fresh coat of paint can do wonders for your home.

Landscaping means a lot more than simply planting a few flowers or bushes around your home. Sometimes it means getting rid of what’s already there. Overgrown trees, bushes, and plants can hide your home’s architecture and curb appeal. By cutting back or getting rid of large chunks of landscaping can open up your yard and make your home look newer. When choosing new landscaping, try to choose plants and trees that are native to your area so you do not have to spend extra time caring for them or water them more than you normally would. When you have to spend more time maintaining its appearance, most people get tired at some point and it ends up looking worse than if they never put it in.

Although it is not an inexpensive fix, take a look at your roof. If you have missing or warped shingles, as well as discoloration, it can really negatively impact the curb appeal of your home. A new roof can really help you, as the first thing it says to a potential buyer is “I won’t have that bill for a while.” There are now many different roofing products available. Even if you go with traditional asphalt shingles again, there are numerous styles, colors, and textures to choose from.

By resurfacing or replacing your asphalt and concrete surfaces can put a nice touch on your home’s appeal. If you want to add something unique, consider going with brick or concrete pavers, acid stained concrete, or other decorative concrete.

Replacing your front door can really freshen up the look of your home. The only thing to keep in mind is to make sure that the style of the door matches the architecture of your home.

Other accessories that you may want to look at are adding updated house numbers, mailbox, and updating your outdoor lights. Just make sure that your accessories match the style of your home. Also look at painting or upgrading your fencing.
