Improving Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Take a look at the outside of your home. What does it say to you? Now, look at your neighbor’s home. Is your home just an average home, or does it scream, “I am special.” Whether your home has stone, brick, or just regular siding on it, I want you to consider something you may not have looked at before; window shutters. There is no better way to inexpensively and quickly dress up the outside of your home, as well as set you apart from your neighbors.

There are four types of shutters available to the homeowner: louvered, raised panel, Bahama, and board and batten. No matter which style you choose, try to avoid the vinyl shutters, as they tend to crack and look cheap. When remodeling your home, it is better to do nothing than it is to make it look cheap. Today, we are going to look at board and batten shutters, as in our opinion, they are the best overall value. Additionally, they will give your home a look of class while still giving just a hint of the classic rustic look.

Board and batten shutters are constructed by laying wide vertical boards side by side, with a light gap between them. Then, a thinner board is attached near the top and bottom horizontally to hold them together. After this, it will need to be stained, varnished, and sanded smooth, before giving it a final coat of polyurethane. Your contractor will then hang them around your windows.

The popularity of board and batten shutters is rising rapidly, especially in the southern United States. Handcrafted wooden shutters will give your home or office an unmatched level of character and distinction. These shutters work very well in both commercial and residential settings.

One of the biggest advantages of this type of shutter is the fact that your home will be unique. Each shutter is custom built by your contractor to fit your windows. No more will you have to make something work because it is close, but not the right size. The odd appearance of a shutter that is too short or too tall can have an overall negative impact on the finished appearance. On top of that, getting other types of shutters made to a custom size can be very expensive. Every installation of board and batten shutters is unique, so your home will always have a custom look without spending huge amounts of money. This is a great way to make a big impact without spending a lot of money.
