Planning Your Next Remodeling Project

As we move into the winter months and spend more time indoors, our thoughts return to our home. During the summer months often we are busy and away from home. Now is the time we begin to focus on things we wish we had in our home, and the warts become more obvious. Now is a great time to start thinking about your next remodeling project.

Winter is often a great time to handle indoor projects, especially with the additional manpower that is available due to the reduction of outdoor construction projects that are going on. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when planning a remodeling project.

Before planning the project, take a look at the cost of the project, as well as the overall scope of the project. Unless you are planning on staying in your home for a long time, be careful not to overbuild your neighborhood. This will make it more difficult to sell and more difficult to recoup the scope of the remodel. For example, If your home is currently worth about $100,000 and the average home price is $130,000 in your neighborhood, scale back that $50,000 addition that you want to add unless you plan on staying in the home for a long time.

Another thing to consider is remodeling rooms. Unless you are planning on flipping the home, make sure that you make it comfortable for you and your family. If you like a certain style or have a theme in mind, go ahead and make it happen. This is your home, and you must think of your family before resale value. Your comfort and enjoyment is what matters most. While this advice may sound as though it conflicts with the above advice, keep in mind that we are talking aesthetics and themes. Additionally, if you are happy with your home, the grass doesn’t look greener on the other side.
